Installation of a Rope Pull Starter Spring on a McCulloch String Trimmer
A recoil starter system, such as those on McCulloch’s gas-powered string trimmers, is composed of a casing, a spring, a pulley and a rope. This mechanism butts from the crankshaft. When the rope is pulled, it spins the pulley, which then spins the crankshaft. This sets in motion the set of moving parts that contributes to combustion in the engine. After the door’s recoil system is damaged, then you can often replace a single part as opposed to the entire system.
Unplug the spark plug and cable to prevent accidental starting. Unscrew the starter assembly cover in the face of the machine and then eliminate it.
Remove the handle from the end of the rope, either by untying it or cutting off the whistle with scissors. Hold the pulley set up, and pull on the rope out of where the handle was to uncoil the rope and then release the pressure on the spring. Remove the assembly screw at the center of the pulley. If your version has a starter hub and spring, remove these.
Remove the pulley in the assembly to show the old spring. Cover it with a towel — it’ll spring out quickly and with no towel on top it may injure you — and also use a screwdriver over the top of it to pull the spring out of place.
Remove any bands or other substances around the new spring. Expand the spring’s hook together with the port from the assembly cover, push it from the cable retainer that holds it in place. Expand the pulley using the spring, and spin it until it catches the new spring’s tab.
Replace the retaining spring and rhythm if applicable. Screw the center screw back into position. Feed the rope back through the hole in the cover, and feed it to the handle. Knot the end of the rope to secure the handle. Set the assembly cover back onto the trimmer and screw it back. Plug in the spark plug and cable.
